The monthly meeting of the East Westwood Improvement Association (EWIA) was held Thursday, Aug. 13, at Third Presbyterian Church, 3358 McHenry Ave. The meeting was called to order at 7:01 p.m.

Police report, Officer Kevin Butler and Sgt. Jacobs Hicks

Two representatives from Cincinnati Police Department District 3, Officer Butler and Sgt. Hicks, presented a report. 

Part 1: Violent crime decreased by 25%.

Zero burglaries reported. 

Property crime down 28%

Day of Hope back-to-school event will take place Aug. 15 at Roll Hill School, noon to 3 p.m.

The National Night Out event at Westwood Town Hall went well, Butler said. 

The current 52-person class from the police academy is set to graduate Nov. 7. There are also a number of transfers from other departments who will start in CPD positions next month.

EWIA President Rodney Christian asked about camera systems in the neighborhood. Hicks said about 30 officers have access to those cameras.

Officers left at 7:16 p.m. after they presented their report.

Cincinnati Public Schools update

Roll Hill Academy teacher, Mrs. Emilie Gray, said:

  • Students are back to school on Wednesday, Aug. 19. Children’s Hospital, Cincinnati Health Department and Freestore Foodbank will be on-site to distribute produce and dairy to families.
  • Sept. 14 is Grandparents Day.
  • This year, Roll Hill has an enrollment of 560 students and counting.

Hope Resource Center

Christian said on Tuesdays and Thursdays the Hope Resource Center is giving out tissues, paper towels, household goods and sometimes groceries.

Community news

Te’Airea Powell, vice president, said East Westwood got the most sidewalks repaired by the city as part of a sidewalk pilot program. A reporter from the Cincinnati Enquirer reached out to her about it.

Let your voice be heard

Members of the public were given the floor to speak for two minutes.

Sarah Henry, candidate for Hamilton County Common Pleas Court judge, spoke. Right now, Henry is a magistrate for juvenile court. She is a former public defender and also worked with youth for Lighthouse Youth Services. She said her political affiliation is Democrat.

She encouraged everyone to vote on Nov. 3.

“It is a moment where I know our democracy is under a great threat. It is incumbent upon  all of us to step up,” she said.
