Council recognizes Summit Country Day Soccer Team
On behalf of the mayor and Cincinnati City Council, President Pro Tem Scotty Johnson and Council Member Anna Albi recognized the Summit Country Day boys and girls varsity soccer teams for winning the Ohio state championship.
Johnson highlighted the boys varsity team’s nine state championships, with the most recent being their second consecutive win. The girls varsity team received their third consecutive win this past season and are six-time Division 4 champions, according to Johnson.
Albi, an alumna of Summit and former member of the girls soccer team, also highlighted the team’s 42-game winning streak.
City of Cincinnati receives a $300,000 grant from DOJ to support Crime Gun Intelligence Center
According to Albi, Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention nonprofit, ranked Cincinnati at 24 in the nation for crime guns.
Albi expressed her excitement to collaborate with the https://bja.ojp.gov/program/cgic-initiative/overview
to address crime gun issues despite it being harder with state gun laws in place.
City continues support for Own Cincy
Own Cincy, a local home ownership nonprofit, will host its third annual summit on June 27. The council approved $50,000 from the city’s Carryover Special Events Fund to go toward this event. According to Council Member Mark Jeffreys, this workshop series is “primarily targeting African American home ownership,” in response to the current low percentage of African American home owners in Cincinnati and nationwide.
Council requests assessment of current city housing and development funds, programming
According to Council Member Evan Nolan, an “abbreviated version” of neighborhood development plans was presented last month, leading to inquiries from community partners.
Nolan hopes this assessment will lead to “more efficient deployment” of development funds and remove the “current alphabet soup of programs and consolidate [money] into a single fund.”
Council Member Jeff Cramerding said he “strongly believes” this will lead to new housing and development, especially in areas where TIF funding is insufficient.
Council requests for city administration to review safety procedures at City Hall
“There is no secret as to why we need this motion,” said Ryan James, adding that there have been “not just one, but multiple catalysts leading up to it.” A public commenter was arrested at City Hall last week on charges she brought a sheathed sword into council chambers.
Johnson highlighted the importance of respect within the council chambers despite “disappointment or disdain” from citizens. Johnson said he signed up to be a public servant, “not a doormat or to be disrespected at any time.”
Johnson shared the following about a recent incident that occurred during a Citizens’ Public Forum session: “Despite what people believe, the lady who came in here with a sword deserved to be arrested,” adding that the woman “fell to the floor twice” and was not pushed by a CPD officer.
