Local Intersections Received Honorary, Secondary Street Names
Four of the six items on the meeting’s agenda were dedicated to various intersections in Cincinnati and their receipt of secondary street names in honor of local staples and community activists.
City Council President Pro-Tem Scotty Johnson was a guest at this meeting and presented each street name request on behalf of the council/committee.
The Fernside Place and Blair Avenue intersection in Evanston received the secondary name of “Anzora Adkins Way.” Johnson highlighted Adkins’ advocacy in the Evanston neighborhood and her consistent effort to ensure police community relations were “rock solid.” According to Johnson, Adkins’ advocacy for police relations was so strong that she probably knew every officer in District 2 by name.
The Montgomery Road and Blair Street intersection in Evanston also received a secondary name honoring Cincinnati Police Officer Darnell Mansoor, who, according to Johnson, taught karate and worked with youth in need of guidance.
Vice Chair Anna Albi, a Madisonville resident, spoke of her admiration for Barnes Brothers Barbershop and its longevity as the Mathis Street and Madison Road intersection in Madisonville was given the honorary, secondary name “Barnes Brothers Way.” According to Johnson, the Madisonville Community Council voted unanimously for this street name change.
Property Sale and Leasing Request
The committee requested approval of the sale of a vacant property in Northside that would allow for the construction of a duplex offering two one-bedroom units. According to Committee Chair Mark Jeffreys, the rent will be $750 to $850, which seems “naturally affordable.”
Jeffreys also presented a request from the East End Community Council to lease space on Setchell Street. The community council is interested in using the space for a community garden, which, according to Jeffreys, seems like a “no-brainer” for the council’s approval for passage.
